Variotype has an MCP server. It lets a coding agent such as Claude, Cursor, VS Code or Codex read your projects and designs, and, if you allow it, start builds. You stay in control: every app asks for your approval, and you can disconnect it at any time.
Server URL
https://variotype.com/mcp
You can also copy this URL, and a ready-made snippet for each app, from Settings, Connected agents, inside Variotype.
Connect your app
- Claude (claude.ai). Open Settings, then Connectors. Add a custom connector and paste the server URL. Sign in to Variotype when asked.
- Claude Code. Run
claude mcp add --transport http variotype https://variotype.com/mcpin your terminal. Then start Claude Code and sign in when asked. - Cursor. Use the "Add to Cursor" button in Settings, Connected agents. Or add this to your
mcp.json:{"mcpServers":{"variotype":{"type":"http","url":"https://variotype.com/mcp"}}} - VS Code. Use the "Add to VS Code" button in Settings, Connected agents. Or add this to
.vscode/mcp.json:{"servers":{"variotype":{"type":"http","url":"https://variotype.com/mcp"}}} - Codex. Run
codex mcp add variotype --url https://variotype.com/mcp, thencodex mcp login variotype. The second command opens the sign-in.
Sign in and permissions
When you connect, Variotype asks you to sign in and approve the app. The approval screen lists what the app is asking for.
- Read access is the default. The app can read the projects in every workspace you belong to, including ones shared with you, and your designs' generated code, screenshots, preview links, chat history and design.md files. Reading generated code and screenshots needs a Pro plan.
- Write access is only given if the app asks for it by name and you approve. The app can then create projects, start builds and send follow-up messages. This spends your credits, exactly as if you had done it yourself.
- An app can never delete or publish anything, or change your billing.
Tools
Read tools:
- List projects. Lists the projects you can access.
- Get project. Reads one project and the designs in it.
- List prototypes. Lists a project's designs and the status of each one's current version.
- Read prototype source. Reads a design's generated files as text.
- Read one file. Reads a single generated file.
- Get preview URL. Returns a live preview link for a design version. The link works for up to 2 hours.
- Screenshot prototype. Returns a PNG screenshot of a design.
- Read iteration history. Reads the messages exchanged on a design.
- Get design.md. Reads a project's design.md.
Write tools (need write access):
- Create project (spends credits). Creates a project and starts one build per model.
- Send message (spends credits). Sends a follow-up message on one design and starts the build.
Disconnect
Open Settings, then Connected agents, and choose Disconnect next to the app. The app's next request is refused straight away. A preview link it already received keeps working for up to 2 hours.
